Minor Repairs To A Roof

Here are some guidelines on how to inspect and handle minor repairs to your roof. If you are ever in doubt, we recommend finding a roofer who can do this work for you as it can be dangerous. Under the visual inspection, you should never leave your ladder as walking on roofs can be extremely dangerous.

In case the roofing is damaged or a tile is not in place (a slipped tile), it can flow under the truss. In order to avoid this, you should regularly inspect the roof and after heavy rain, always look at the roof decking to see if it if the water is still flowing correctly into the guttering. The damaged tiles, if any, should be replaced in the shortest possible time.

Replacing the roof tiles

You should check the roof and see if there are cracked, broken or crumbling tiles. When removing broken or damaged, we must first make sure that we have completely removed all the debris. Lift up the other tiles in a row above the damaged one with two wooden wedges.

Some roofs can vary between pitch, flat and barrel styled roofs, check out for details on the different types of roofing.

Insert the tip of the roof spoon under the damaged tile, lift it above the bar and remove it. Push the new tile until it catches its teeth by the bar. Then remove the wooden wedges, and if you still have a glitch somewhere, you repeat the procedure.

This way you can replace all kinds of tiles except the grooved ones. They are either changed with a 32 mm aluminum alloy nail or reinforced with clips.

Slate Roofing

New materials and technical procedures are currently used in the construction industry. At the same time, however, it is still done under the same principle as to the natural building materials of our ancestors. One of them is the clay slate used by ancient Romans on their dwellings.

Slate Plate Replacement

Replace the slate plate with the help of a tear-down tool. Insert it under a cracked plate and move it sideways until you hit the fixing nail. Pulling down, it catches the tool’s snooze behind the nail and pulls it out or drops it. After removing both nails, which the plate was attached, its cracked residues can be pulled out.

Fasten the new plate with 200 x 25 mm dimensions. Then bend the lead belt back over the bottom edge of the plate. The bend is doubled so that the belt does not straighten later with the descending and melting snow. Stop the nail that secures the lead belt into a latch, to which the bottom row of slate slate slabs is nailed.

If in doubt on replacing any section or tile on your roof, get a qualified contractor for the work. If you live in Dublin, we recommend TC Roofers who are local roofers in Dublin.

By replacing damaged tiles or slate slabs, we contribute to the good condition of the truss and thus the soil space. You must not underestimate, in particular, how important the regular inspection of the roofing after the winter season and heavy rains, just as before winter.

Moss & Algae

Make sure while you are looking at the roof for any signs of moss or algae on your roof. This can lead to other problems such as blocking up your guttering system, having drainage issues and in worst case situations leading to tiles slipping off due to the weight.

We recommend reading about Moss and Algae on Roofs to learn how to go about removing it.
